ICG’s New Holder Reveals Mint Mark & Date on Edge of Presidential Dollar

President’s Day 2007 marks the release date of the Presidential Dollar. Click here for full US Mint Release Schedule. These dollars are exciting to collectors of all ages and are unique in many ways. Perhaps most significantly, the mint mark, the date and the two mottos, “In God We Trust” and “E Pluribus Unum”, only appear on the edge of the coin. The position of these edge-incused inscriptions will vary with each coin. This is a break from the conventional positioning of these inscriptions, usually found on the obverse and reverse of the coin.

The edge-incused inscriptions present a few challenges to third-party grading services. Traditionally, coins are graded and encapsulated in a holder that allows the viewer to study the obverse and reverse but not the edge. Such traditional holders will not display crucial information like the mint mark on these new dollars.

Independent Coin Grading (ICG) believes hiding the mint mark has potential to lead to significant problems for collectors and dealers.

To ensure the visibility of the mint mark, the date and the mottos, ICG has developed the Presidential View TM Holder. The new holder, announced on national television on February 6, 2007and in a press release to the numismatic press the next day, features a modification in the gasket (the component that holds the coin in place inside the holder) which displays more of the edge and allows the viewer to see the details for themselves. A typical gasket surrounds the coin, securing it in the holder. The new Presidential View TM Gasket rests the coin on prongs instead. The prongs both hold the coin securely in place and give a clear view of most of the edge.

The second challenge is dealing with the fact that the position of the information on the edge will be different on each coin. This means the solution must be dynamic enough to adjust to each individual coin.
